Who doesn’t want to be BFF with their mirror? And the key to make that relationship blossom and last a lifetime lies in the makeup and skincare aisles of the world – hallowed shopping ground offering a retail utopia of unmatched promise, inspiration and beauty.

I can’t help but envision the rose pout and smokey eye that will perfectly accompany my Calvin Klein shift dress. I adamantly believe that using a particular brand of refreshing face mist, while it may deplete my weekly cocktail budget, is THE key component to setting skin that will glow brighter than Taylor Swift’s Grammy collection.

And despite my husband hauling me out of every Walgreens, Sephora and department store cosmetics aisle I can find, stating that the red lipstick I just HAVE to have is the exact same shade as the one I bought last week, I know better. Because it’s that same shade of red that will as Mindy Kaling says, take the outfit that I’ve been dying to wear all week from “Woaahh to daaaammmn!”

I’m not a chemist or a makeup artist, just a gal willing to put my mug to the test. As I explore the endless possibilities of everything from anti-aging masks and fruit acid peels to smudge proof eyeliner, I will keep you in the know, so you can walk into Ulta with confidence and feel like a true beauty virtuoso.

Without further adieu, let me share the 5 marvelous must-haves that are currently permanent residents in my makeup bag.

Britt’s Beauty Staples

Caudalie Beauty Elixir. This refreshing face mist packs a punch with just a couple sprays to the face. Part toner, part serum this magic in a bottle smoothens skin, works to tighten pores, and even stimulates microcirculation. It’s fantastic when you need a quick burst of radiance and even better when used before applying your moisturizer.

Lacôme La Base Pro. Miracle worker? Check. Durable? You bet. Oil and irritant free? Heck yes. Not only does the primer set a perfect canvas for all your makeup masterpieces, it noticeably refines skin’s texture and diffuses light from highlighting any imperfections.  And for gals with sensitive skin like me, this primer won’t clog pores or light your face up like a stoplight.

Neutrogena Shine Control Liquid Makeup. This foundation truly performs as promised. It zaps shine while providing a natural matte finish and holds up throughout the workday, transforming my mirror checks from maintenance to mock modeling sessions. And with an added bonus of broad spectrum SPF 20, what’s not to love?

L’Oréal Brow Stylist Custom Brow Shaping Pencil. Transparent eyebrows? No worries, I’ve got you covered! This amazing pencil duo allows you customize your shade as you fill in brows to create the perfect full and face-framing arch. With a choice of three shade sets, you’re stunning brows will scream bombshell.

Tarte Mineral Powder Bronzer. While it may sound odd because I’m extremely porcelain, I literally cannot rant and rave about this bronzer enough. The bronzer blends seamlessly and creates incredibly natural contour when highlighting your hairline, cheekbones and jawline. Whether you’re a bronzing novice or seasoned artisan, you’re in good hands.
