The Summer’s Concerts and Music Festivals for Every Budget

June 2014 | by | in Daily Eye

music-festival-style-guideSummer is the season of music festivals — and music festival clothing! But if you’ve found that after purchasing your floral headbands, eye jewels, body glitter, high waisted shorts and neon crop tops, you have no money left for the pricey tickets, here are some free alternatives to satisfy your musical-cravings.

Instead of: Governor’s Ball Music Festival

When: June 6-8

Where: Randall’s Island

Who: Outkast, Jack White, Vampire Weekend, The Strokes, Phoenix, Skrillex… just to name a few…

What: Multi-genre music festival.

Price: $230 for 3-day pass or $100 per day

Try: Celebrate Brooklyn! Opening Night

When: June 4

Where: Prospect Park Bandshell

Who: Janelle Monae

What: This is the first of a weekly summer concert series that is completely free, except for a handful of benefit concerts that help fund the rest of the events. Get there early to see the soul/R&B/funk singer up close.

Price: Free

Instead of: Mad Decent Block Party

When: August 9

Where: Coney Island

Who: Dillon FrancisDiploFlosstradamusGrandtheft, Walshy Fire

What: EDM music festival.

Price: $50.90

Try: Freedom Dance Party

When: July 3

Where: Central Park

Who: Herbert Holler, DJ Cosi, Marc Smooth

What: The 11-year-old event is the longest-running weekly Friday-night dance party in NYC, and it is set to hit the Central Park SummerStage to celebrate its longevity. Why wouldn’t you go to Papermag’s People’s Choice for “Best Party” for free?

Price: Free

Instead of: Electric Zoo

When: August 29-31

Where: Randall’s Island

Who: David Guetta, Dada Life, Nicky Romero, Zedd, Alesso, and more…

What: Electronic music festival.

Price: $369 (yikes!)

Try: Denim & Supply Ralph Lauren and Macy’s Present: Avicii

When: July 4

Where: Governor’s Island

Who: Avicii

What: This concert is funded by a collaboration between Denim & Supply Ralph Lauren and Macy’s. While the “free” admission to the EDM concert does have a catch — you need to spend $75 on Denim & Supply merchandise at a participating store to get the ticket — it’s a great way to rationalize a shopping spree!

Price: Free with purchase of $75 of Denim & Supply Ralph Lauren at participating stores
